The Hyatt Regency Tsim Sha Tsui is located in a 64-story complex called The Masterpiece, in the heart of Kowloon in Hong Kong. A tower amidst a sea of towers – the 11th tallest in Hong Kong – this building is practically a city of its own, with a 6-floor shopping center at its base and stretching into the basement, the Hyatt occupying floors 3 to 24, and residential condominiums stretching from the 27th floor to the top. There are a variety of restaurants and bars located throughout the complex, as well, and links to mass transit stations at the base.

The Hyatt Regency Tsim Sha Tsui is Hyatt’s option to those visiting the Kowloon region of Hong Kong, which is across the water from Hong Kong Island, on the mainland. Located at the intersection of Hanoi and Mody Roads, it’s just a couple blocks from the waterfront, The Peninsula, the Hong Kong Space Museum, and ferries to the other side. Just as importantly for our trip, it was less than 5 minutes away from Sam’s Tailor by foot INSERT LINK, handy for our early Sunday morning visit to my favorite tailor.

I booked the stay using Hyatt’s Cash + Points option. As a Category 4 location, that meant parting with 7,500 points + $100 USD per night, a bargain for a hotel typically charging more than triple that rate in cash nightly. Even better, I was able to apply a suite upgrade certificate earned as part of my Diamond status with Hyatt, bringing the true value of the room closer to $700-800 per night for a three night stay.

We were met at the subterranean level where taxis may drop arriving passengers by three different bellmen working for the hotel, who whisked away our luggage quickly and informed me I could check in at the club level, rather than in the main lobby. Taking this opportunity, we ascended to the club level and were offered the chance to grab a drink and relax while check-in was completed. The two-story club offers floor-to-ceiling windows, with an exceptional view of Hong Kong’s skyline.

With check-in taken care of, we were sent along to our room, located at the end of a richly paneled hallway:

Each floor has just one such suite, each affording one of the hotel’s best views of the city around it. Large windows by the bedside offer endless opportunities to spot new details and even catch glimpses of workers in buildings nearby.

As a Diamond member, I was pleased to see a selection of fruits and a bottle of wine waiting in the room for our arrival.

The bathroom was gorgeous, offering large, separate shower and bath areas, as well as a closed-off toilet area and a capacious closet and dressing space.

Space is at a premium in cities like Hong Kong, so having such a large room at our disposal was particularly luxurious.

Unfortunately, we had an odd issue with our room on the first night, as a lingering scent of cigarette smoke seemed to permeate the space. It wasn’t so bad as to be a problem for my testy sinuses, but I did call to see if moving to a different suite would be possible. We were informed that no other suites were available that evening, but were asked to just leave our bags packed up in the morning when we departed, and that everything would be moved for us to another suite the next afternoon. Checking in with the lobby desk upon our return, we had sure enough been moved down a floor, to a suite that was identical, with our bags almost exactly where we had left them above our heads that morning.

One of the best features of the Hyatt Regency Tsim Sha Tsui is a free smartphone available for use throughout your stay at the hotel. Guests can take these phones with them throughout the city, and enjoy unlimited LTE coverage. The phones themselves are loaded with guide maps, opportunities for discounts, and useful information, but they can also be used as a hotspot to share their high-speed connection with personal devices. This was a huge win; as a T-Mobile customer, I had access to 3G speeds for free on my own, but a boost in speed from carrying this handy device with us was hugely appreciated, and makes me wonder why other hotels don’t adopt this perk internationally.

The Hyatt Regency Tsim Sha Tsui is a really excellent choice if you’re staying in Hong Kong. While the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong is considered the superior property by some, I prefer to stay on the Kowloon side and like the fact that the Regency is just a Category 4 property, while the Grand Hyatt is a more expensive Category 6 property. Given the choice, I wouldn’t hesitate to return to the Hyatt Regency Tsim Sha Tsui and look forward to returning there in 2017 on my next visit.
